What are Salmonella, Brucella and Rickettsia?
Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal multisystemic illness caused primarily by Salmonella typhi which affects roughly 17 million people annually, causing nearly 600,000 deaths. S typhi has been a major human pathogen for thousands of years, thriving in conditions of poor sanitation, crowding, and social chaos. This disease is characterized by the sudden onset of a sustained and systemic fever, severe headache, nausea, and loss of appetite. Other symptoms can include constipation or diarrhoea, enlargement of the spleen, possible development of meningitis, and general malaise. Untreated typhoid fever cases result in mortality rates ranging from 12-30% while treated cases allow for 99% survival.

Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis are gram-negative bacteria which cause Brucellosis, a disease affecting sheep, cattle, and sometimes humans. The disease has both an acute and a chronic phase. The chronic phase will last as long as the host is alive without treatment. Acute symptoms include fever, chills, headache, backache, weakness, and weight loss. The chronic symptoms are usually recurring joint pain, fatigue, and headaches. Brucellosis is incapacitating rather than fatal (fatality in about 2%).

Rickettsia is a genus of motile, gram-negative, non-sporeforming bacteria. Rickettisae species are carried as parasites by ticks, mites, lice, or fleas and cause a variety of diseases in humans. Rickettsia conorii causes Mediterranean Spotted Fever, Rickettsia prowazekii causes typhus, Rickettsia rickettsii causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Rickettsia akari causes rickettsial pox.
